Choosing the Right Seed for Metrolina
Every July, cool-season lawns in the Charlotte area take a beating. There are plenty of reasons why, but using the wrong seed is near the top of the list—second only to having the wrong soil pH. Invest in a blend designed for our climate. Next summer it may still show some stress in July and August, but it’ll hold up better than your neighbor’s, and you’ll spend less time and money fixing it in the fall.
A few cardinal rules before we get into what to do:
- Do NOT buy seed from big box stores. Most of it is loaded with filler, or blends poorly suited for our climate.
- Do NOT buy Kentucky Blue Grass or Kentucky-31 Tall Fescue (K-31). It’s cheap for a reason—poor heat tolerance and highly prone to fungus here in Charlotte.
- Buy a seed blend tailored for Zone 8a. A diversified mix is insurance—if one variety struggles, the others pick up the slack. Around here, plenty can happen to kill your lawn..
