Welcome to Winter in Metrolina: Enjoy the Holidays

Rest and Relax!
Now that you’ve done all the heavy lifting in the Fall, Tall Fescue (or another cool-season grass) in Charlotte rests during the cooler months. You don’t need to be out there every weekend. Winter is about playing defense, not offense. Your main job is to protect what you’ve invested, fix what’s broken, and plan ahead for when things warm up.

The Big Picture

  • Fescue is mostly dormant. Growth slows to a crawl once nighttime temps consistently hit the 40s.
  • Weeds try to take over. Especially winter annuals like Poa annua
  • Soil health matters, even now. Winter is a good time for soil testing and addressing pH or nutrient issues.
  • Prep for spring now = less work (and fewer headaches) later.

What To Do (and What NOT To Do) This Winter
